Bangladesh evacuating consulate in trouble-hit Sittwe

  • Consulate officials will work from Bangladesh embassy in Yangon
  • India already evacuated its officials

Bangladesh is evacuating its officials from the consulate in trouble hit Sittwe in the Rakhine state of Myanmar.

A senior official of the foreign ministry told Dhaka Tribune that they have started the process.

"We hope to take all our staff at the consulate by Tuesday," the official said, adding that they would work from Yangon where the Bangladesh embassy is located.

Three among 10 officials, employees and their family members had reached Yangon as of Sunday night.

India and Bangladesh, which have borders with Myanmar, have the consulates in Sittwe. Bangladesh consulate has eight staff.

India already evacuated their officials.

The Arakan Army is fighting against the government forces in the Rakhine state.

Myanmar border police, BGP, took shelter in Bangladesh. Mortal shells also fell inside the Bangladesh border in which two people were killed and many more injured.

Earlier, Bangladesh summoned Myanmar Ambassador in Dhaka U Aung Kyaw Moe to protest the casualties due to Myanmar's internal conflicts.

Bangladesh Ambassador in Yangon Dr Md Monwar Hossain also met Myanmar foreign minister to discuss the issue.
