Foreign Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud called for the peaceful settlement of disputes and promotion of a culture of peace while speaking at the 19th NAM Summit in Kampala, Uganda on Saturday.
He referred to the statement of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at the NAM Summit in Algiers in 1973.
He highlighted the fact that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is carrying forward Bangabandhu’s legacy of peace, development and human rights with courage and determination.
Dr Hasan Mahmud reiterated Bangladesh’s unwavering support to the oppressed people of Palestine and demanded justice for them. He urged the world community to stand with Palestinians and use all tools available to support their cause.
He also urged all concerned to redouble efforts to ensure a sustainable solution to the Rohingya issue.
The foreign minister underscored the need for a constructive and non-confrontational dialogue approach to promote peaceful, just and inclusive societies.
The two-day summit, inaugurated on Friday by Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni as new chair of the Movement, is expected to adopt the outcome document, Kampala Declaration and a declaration on Palestine.
On the sidelines of the NAM summit, Foreign Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud also held separate meetings with Myanmar Foreign Minister Than Swe and Indian External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar.
They discussed Rohingya repatriation and other issues of importance between the countries, the foreign ministry said.
The meeting with Than Swe was the first between the two ministers since Hasan Mahmud took charge of the foreign ministry.
Rohingya repatriation is the major thorn between the two neighbours.
Over 1.1 million Rohingyas took refuge in Bangladesh fleeing ethnic cleansing in their homeland Rakhine state of Myanmar.
None of them have returned despite deals between the two governments. China is also involved in a tripartite process.
Meanwhile, Dr Jaishankar congratulated Dr Hasan Mahmud on his new role as foreign minister. Both leaders discussed various issues of mutual interest and ways to carry forward the existing excellent bilateral relations between the two countries.
They also discussed the upcoming visit of Bangladesh's foreign minister to New Delhi.
