The Russian Embassy in Dhaka on Wednesday said that the global “anti-Russian disinformation campaign, conducted and financed by the West, is not slowing down.”
“In recent times, Western politicians visiting Bangladesh have not hesitated to broadcast their views on the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine,” the embassy said in a statement, clarifying Moscow’s position on the war.
The statement followed French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Dhaka. The Ukraine issue was addressed in the joint statement after the bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on September 11.
The Ukraine issue was also discussed during the Bangladesh-UK strategic dialogue held on Tuesday.
Bangladesh and France reaffirmed their “unwavering commitment to international law and the UN Charter, particularly the principle of the peaceful resolution of conflicts, and an abiding faith in multilateralism”.
“In that regard, France and Bangladesh reiterated their commitment to the territorial integrity and sovereignty of all nations. They affirmed that the war in Ukraine constitutes a violation of international law, in particular of the UN Charter, and poses a serious threat to the rules-based international order,” the joint statement read.
They expressed their support for all efforts toward establishing a just and lasting peace in accordance with the principles of the UN Charter.
They voiced concerns over the global consequences of the war - be it financial, economic, or affecting food and energy security - that impacted all nations and signalled their readiness to engage together to address those challenges.
However, prior to the French president’s visit, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov visited Bangladesh and spoke against any interference in the region.
The US State Department, in its daily briefing on Tuesday in Washington, criticized Lavrov’s comments.
Spokesperson Matthew Miller said: “A country that has invaded two of its neighbours and prosecutes an aggressive war, bombing schools, hospitals, and apartment buildings daily, should not be talking about any other country imposing dictates.”
The Russian Embassy in Dhaka said in its statement: “We are grateful to all who sincerely want peace and are worried about the current situation. If peace depended on ordinary Ukrainians and not on the puppet regime in Kyiv, it would have been achieved long ago.”
“But, today in Ukraine, Russia is dealing primarily with Washington and its Nato allies, who are waging a 'proxy war' against us, expecting it to be fought to the last Ukrainian. As of now, peace in Ukraine does not appear to be part of their agenda,” it added.
