Police have arrested a man over the death of a Special Branch (SB) sub-inspector who was allegedly beaten to death during a dispute over parking a private car in Savar’s Aminbazar on Saturday night.
The arrestee suspect has been identified as Zahirul, whom police described as the main accused in the case. Other suspects have also been identified and efforts are underway to arrest them. Savar Model police station Officer-in-Charge Md Saiful Alam confirmed the arrest and the filing of a case on Sunday afternoon.
The victim, Altab Hossain, 58, was working as an SB sub-inspector in Dhaka’s Malibagh zone.
“Zahirul, the main accused who allegedly beat him and was involved in the dispute over the car, has been arrested. The victim’s wife filed the case,” he said.
The OC said police identified the other suspects through the arrested man’s confession, CCTV footage and further investigation.
“Operations are underway to arrest the others,” he added.
The incident took place around 8pm Saturday in the Bardeshi area of Aminbazar.
According to police, an altercation broke out between Altab, his younger son Ariful Islam, 26, and a group of 10–15 people outside a vest factory in the Bardeshi Madina Housing area over the parking of a private car.
At one stage, the group attacked Altab and Ariful, leaving both seriously injured.
Around 9:30pm, they were taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in Dhaka, where doctors declared Altab dead.
Dhaka District Police Superintendent Shamima Pervin said Altab and his son were attacked while trying to settle a dispute between two sides over parking a private car.
“The sub-inspector and his son were attacked while trying to settle a dispute between two sides over parking a private car. Efforts are underway to arrest those involved,” she said.
Altab was the son of late Jurain Ali Sheikh of Sadhup Para village under Enayetpur police station in Sirajganj. He lived with his family in the Bardeshi Madina City area of Aminbazar.
SB Assistant Sub-Inspector Masud Rana of the Savar zone said Altab was an SB sub-inspector but was not posted in the Savar zone. He said Altab worked in an unspecified SB zone in Dhaka and owned property in Aminbazar.
Police said they launched an operation after receiving information about the attack and arrested Zahirul.
The OC said further details about the case would be disclosed later.
