Former Indian foreign secretary Harsha Vardhan Shringla has said India never wants any inimical force to come to power that patronizes radicalization and militancy in Bangladesh.

“India also believes that Bangladesh has progressed tremendously in the last decade under the current leadership," he was quoted as saying in a statement issued by the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi on Tuesday.

He made the comment when a delegation of the Awami League led by Agriculture Minister Dr Muhammad Abdur Razzaque met him.

The delegation is currently visiting India at the invitation of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. Other members of the delegation are Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud, lawmakers Aroma Dutta and Merina Jahan, and Awami League Organizing Secretary Sujit Roy Nandi.

Shringla is the chief coordinator of the G20 (Group of 20) of which India is the current president.

In his diplomatic career, he also served in Bangladesh as the high commissioner.

During the meeting, Shringla reiterated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s foreign policy is neighbourhood first and that Bangladesh is first among all these neighbours.

“Bangladesh was invited as a guest country (to the G20 summit) for these special relations,” he said.
