Seventeen Bangladeshi citizens, including Reserved Women Seat-19 MP from Chittagong Khadizatul Anwar, detained by Oman police have been released following the intervention of the Bangladesh embassy in Oman.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Seheli Sabrin disclosed the information when asked about it at a weekly media briefing at the ministry on Thursday.

She also urged Bangladeshi expatriates to follow local laws so that guests do not face such "embarrassment.”

The Awami League’s Khadizatul Anwar went on a personal visit to Oman on Tuesday and held a meeting with party leaders and activists at Haffa House Muscat Hotel at night. Some expatriates from Saudi Arabia and the UAE also joined the meeting.

Police took them into custody as they had not taken permission to hold the meeting.

"In Omani law, you have to take permission to hold any meeting. Those who organized the meeting did not do that," the spokesperson said.

"We hope that they will obey local laws so that they do not face embarrassment. It is an embarrassment for all," she said.

Khadizatul Anwar took oath as an MP on February 20, 2019. She is the daughter of the late Rafiqul Anwar, who was an MP representing Fatikchhari in Chittagong.
