The bodies of four expatriate brothers from Rangunia Upazila, Chittagong, who were found dead inside a car in Oman, arrived at their village home on Wednesday morning.
The bodies reached Lalannagar Union by ambulance from Dhaka airport, where mourners gathered as the coffins arrived at the family home.
Earlier, the bodies were flown to Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight that landed at 8:15pm on Tuesday.
Family members received the bodies at the airport in the presence of MP Hummam Qader Chowdhury, who expressed condolences over the tragedy and praised the efforts of the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and the Bangladesh Embassy in repatriating the bodies swiftly.
Amir Hossain Sumon, a member of Ward No 5 of Lalannagar Union Parishad, told Dhaka Tribune that funeral prayers would be held at 11am before the brothers are buried at the family graveyard. He added that grave preparations had already been completed.
Citing local expatriates, he said Oman police investigated the deaths and suspect the brothers died after inhaling carbon monoxide gas emitted from the vehicle’s exhaust while the engine was running.
The deceased were identified as Rashedul Islam, Shahedul Islam, Sirajul Islam and Shahidul Islam, sons of the late Jamal Uddin. Rashedul and Shahedul were married, while Sirajul and Shahidul were unmarried.
Rashedul and Shahedul had been scheduled to return home together on May 15.
The brothers were from Bandarajar Para in Ward No 5 of Lalannagar Union in Rangunia. Four of the five brothers in the family had been living and working in Oman, while another brother, Enam, lives in Bangladesh. Their elderly mother is ill.
The bodies were recovered by Oman police from a parked vehicle in the Muladdah area on May 12.
Officer-in-Charge of Rangunia Police Station Mohammad Zahir Uddin confirmed that the bodies reached the village home on Wednesday morning.
