Canada has not made any changes to its visa regime for Bangladesh, a spokesperson of the Canadian High Commission in Dhaka told Dhaka Tribune.

The question came following social media speculations that Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman's visa application was rejected by Canada due to the new US visa policy. He had a plan to attend an education program on July 19.

Washington recently announced that the US will be able to restrict the issuance of visas for any Bangladeshi individual, believed to be responsible for, or complicit in, undermining the democratic election process in Bangladesh. This is what the Secretary of State Antony Blinken said to ensure free and fair elections in Bangladesh.

Embassies do not share the status of an individual's visa issue to others.

A journalist in a Facebook post, called Prof Akhtaruzzaman the "first martyr" of the US visa policy. He also tagged a card containing headlines of a report of his visa rejection news published on July 19 in Manabzamin newspaper, and another news of the VC criticizing the US visa policy published on June 2 in Kaler Kantha.

The comment came as a surprise since the vice-chancellor is not involved in the election process and that Canada has nothing to do with the US policies.

The journalist in the comment section argued that any US policy is "automatically applicable" to Canada.

"Canada has its own visa policy," the spokesperson of the High Commission told Dhaka Tribune. "Canada has not made any changes to its visa regime for Bangladesh."

"Because of extended wait times, we encourage everyone wanting to travel to Canada to apply for their visas as early as possible," the spokesperson said.
