Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto has said a new world economic order is emerging where success requires partners like Bangladesh.
He described Bangladesh as one of the fastest growing economies where he sees a huge opportunity for Hungarian companies in Bangladesh.
Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen held bilateral talks with the Hungarian minister in Budapest on Tuesday.
After 22 years, a Bangladeshi foreign minister visited Budapest, according to the Hungarian foreign ministry.
The ministers signed two MoUs, one on cooperation in the field of training and education of the atomic industry on the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, and another on a diplomatic exchange program, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The two foreign ministers agreed to deepen relations in the fields of economic cooperation, health, climate change, water and waste-water management, trade and investment including post-graduation facilities, nuclear energy, and post-Covid-19 recovery.
Mentioning Bangladesh’s leadership role in the global climate discourse as the immediate past chair of the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF), Momen requested his Hungarian counterpart to extend cooperation to mobilize more support to implement the Paris Climate Agreement.
They also agreed to cooperate in clean and renewable energy sectors.
They discussed future cooperation paths in the field of nuclear energy as both Bangladesh and Hungary are availing of the same technology for respective new nuclear power plants.
They agreed on the training and education of nuclear energy professionals.
The ministers expressed satisfaction at the successful ongoing cooperation within the framework of the Hungarian scholarship (Stipendium Hungaricum) program, which provides 140 scholarships annually to Bangladeshi students to pursue undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate studies in Hungarian universities.
Momen requested the Hungarian foreign minister to continue their support in multilateral fora for speedy and sustainable repatriation of Rohingyas to their homeland in Myanmar.
Minister Szijjarto recalled his visit to Bangladesh in September 2020 and appreciated the exemplary socio-economic development of Bangladesh under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The Hungarian foreign minister announced that the consular office of Hungary in Dhaka will act as a full-fledged consular facility starting June 7.
Both the ministers expressed their hopes to open resident missions in Dhaka and Budapest in the not-so-distant future.
Momen handed over to Minister Szijjarto a special message from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina addressed to the newly re-elected Hungarian prime minister, Viktor Orban.
The foreign ministers agreed to work on a possible visit of Prime Minister Orban to Bangladesh within this year.
