Twelve Bangladeshi medical students, who were studying in Ukraine, have been given an opportunity to take refuge and continue their studies in Hungary as the war between Ukraine and Russia rages on.

Deputy Chief of Mission Rahat Bin Zaman in Austria confirmed the development to Dhaka Tribune on Wednesday.

At present, there are 28 Bangladeshis in Hungary under the supervision of the Bangladesh embassy in Vienna.

Arrangements have been made to take 15 students to Budapest under Semmelweis University on February 26.

Twelve of them are first, second, and third-year students, two are completing their postgraduate degrees and one will leave Hungary for home on March 4.

All are students of the medical department under Uzhhorod National University (Uzhhorodsʹkyy Natsionalʹnyy Universytet), Uzhhorod, Zakarpattia Oblast in Ukraine near the Hungary-Slovakia border.

"They will be able to study in Hungary at the same level as they studied in Ukraine," said Rahat Bin Zaman.

Moreover, another Bangladeshi has come to Hungary with his wife and two children. They have Ukrainian citizenship. They will also remain in Hungary.

Meanwhile, 10 more Bangladeshis entered through the Hungary border in the last two days while three came in through the Slovakia border on February 27.

However, they have not yet decided to return to the country, according to the embassy.

Bangladeshis in Ukraine are trying to cross borders into different neighbouring countries and move to safety in light of the ongoing Russian invasion in the Eastern European country.

Until Wednesday night, 562 Bangladeshis had crossed into various countries, the Bangladesh ambassador in Warsaw told Dhaka Tribune.

According to Ambassador Sultana Laila Hossain, many more were still waiting to cross the border.

Russia began its invasion of Ukraine on the morning of February 26, inflicting heavy damage on people and property.
