Two female pilots of the Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) have become a source of inspiration for Congolese women while serving in the Democratic Republic of the Congo as UN peacekeepers.
In a special video “UN in Action,” the two female pilots, Flight Captain Tamanna-E-Lutfi and Flight Captain Nayma Haque, share of their experiences during their yearlong service under United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Monusco).
In the short video documentary, the pilots talk of the different type of missions they carry out and the challenges they face in their line of work.
Flight Captain Nayma is the second-in-command of Monusco BANAIR and both officers serve as helicopter pilots in the sub-Saharan country.
Their responsibilities include performing operational duties like carrying emergency medical support, patients and casualties.
“We are a sort of inspiration for the local women. When they see us, they feel they should have education. They should fight for their rights. They should work hard to achieve something because it is possible," Nayma said in the video.
Earlier in 2017, the two officers became Bangladesh’s first ever female military pilots to have joined the peacekeeping mission of United Nations in Congo.
