“Our heartfelt condolences to Dr Joya Sengupta and other members of his family, his friends and well wishers,” the envoy said in his condolence message on Sunday.
“I had the occasion to meet Suranjit Sengupta, veteran leader of Bangladeshi and close associate of Bangabandhu, on a number of occasions. The last time was just a few days ago at a Saraswati Puja function in the parliament premises, which he attended despite his evident illness,” he recalled.
“He was clearly a leader of immense stature, standing, sagacity and dignity. His passing away represents an immeasurable loss for the country and leaves a void,” said the Indian diplomat.
Suranjit passed away at Labaid Hospital in Dhaka early Sunday at the age of 71.
