Parliamentarians call for Schengen-like visa for Commonwealth countries

Update : 06 Nov 2017, 11:08 PM
Delegates at the 63rd Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC) recommended that a uniform visa policy should be introduced among the Commonwealth countries similar to the European Union's Schengen system to ease travel restrictions. The recommendations were made at a workshop titled “The role of parliamentarians in building stronger ties within the commonwealth: including new trade issue, visa issue, travel restriction, non-traffic restriction” on the second day of the conference in Dhaka on Monday. The parliamentarians also recommended that countries work together for trade development, simplifying tariff system and improving ease of doing business by streamlining legislation. They said that in a competitive and globalised world, there was no alternative to working together. The countries should develop better communication among one another to exchange views, experiences and lessons learned, they suggested. The recommendations will be placed at a meeting of the CPC's general assembly on Tuesday. Canadian MP Alexandra Mendes moderated the workshop while Nigerian Senator Eke Ekweremadu MP and Lord Davies of Stamfor weighed in with key recommendations.
