AL leaders optimistic about China telling Myanmar to take back the Rohingya

Awami League presidium member and MP Lt Col (retd) Muhammad Faruk Khan said China will influence the government of Myanmar government to repatriate the Rohingya refugees who fled their homeland and entered Bangladesh. The Awami League leader made the statement after returning from China on Wednesday. He said: “We demanded the Rohingya to be repatriated before monsoon starts next April. China assured us that Myanmar will take back the Rohingyas. China also assured us that they will help Myanmar to rehabilitate the Rohingya people in Myanmar.” “The Vice-Minister of International Liaison Department of Communist Party of China (CPC) Li Jun attended the meeting,” Faruk added.

An 18-member delegation led by Faruk Khan went to China on September 19 to attend a meeting with the leaders of CPC. The delegation discussed the Rohingya issue and other bilateral interests. Faruk also said they were told that China will play a positive role in resettling the Rohingya people in Myanmar within the next one-and-a-half year. He also said that China praised Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for sheltering the Rohingya in Bangladesh. CPC Vice-Minister Li Jun also promised to send 153 tons of relief materials for Rohingyas from his country. The Awami League delegation considers the meeting successful given the Communist Party’s responses to Bangladesh’s proposals.The story was first published on Bangla Tribune.
