Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) held its 26th convocation Wednesday at the International Convention City Bashundhara, awarding degrees to 2,496 students from undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
Among the graduates, 2,140 were undergraduates and 356 postgraduates. Five undergraduates received the Chancellor’s Gold Medal for outstanding academic performance, while one student earned the “All-Rounder” Gold Medal for excellence in academics and co-curricular activities.
Certificates were presented on behalf of the President and Chancellor of IUB by Professor Dr. C. R. Abrar, Adviser to the Ministry of Education. Photographer, writer, and human rights activist Dr. Shahidul Alam delivered the convocation address, and Professor Dr. SMA Faiz, Chairman of the University Grants Commission, attended as Guest of Honor.
Speakers included Didar A. Hossain, Chairman of the IUB Board of Trustees; Mohammad Zakaria Khan, Chairman of the Education, Science, Technology and Cultural Development Trust; Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. M. Tamim; Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Daniel W. Lund; and the deans of IUB’s six faculties. The ceremony was conducted by Registrar Asif Parvez.
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, each graduate received a Tk 500 book voucher redeemable at University Press Limited and Pathak Samabesh during the Amar Ekushey Book Fair.
Professor Dr. Abrar highlighted the importance of critical thinking and democracy, while Dr. Alam urged graduates to work for social justice and humanity. Professor Dr. Faiz encouraged students to uphold responsibility and expectation in a rapidly changing world. Vice-Chancellor Dr. Tamim emphasized curiosity, creativity, and scientific thinking to address Bangladesh’s future challenges.
This year’s valedictorian was Sajid Bin Mohammad, a marketing graduate and Chancellor’s Gold Medal recipient. Other Gold Medal recipients included Tasnuva Mahmud, Asadullah Ibn Masud, Zahra Alam Lia, and Nazmun Nahar. Ahmed Tawsif Jami received the All-Rounder Gold Medal. Outstanding students in co-curricular activities were also recognized in culture, social service, and sports.
The convocation concluded with evening performances by Pritom Hasan, Boga Taleb, the IUB Music Club, and the IUB Dance Club.
