Country's leading animal rights organization People for Animal Welfare (PAW) Foundation on Friday organized a mini marathon to spread awareness about environmental conservation and animal welfare.
About 100 people from both within the country and abroad participated in the event titled "Run for PAW," held at the National Botanical Garden in Dhaka on Friday, according to a press release.
Participants requested citizens to be more responsible towards the environment and animals through this event, where they ran for five kilometers through the area in absolute silence.
National Botanical Garden Director Mollah Rezaul Karim and PAW Founding Chairman Raqibul Haque Emil handed over medals to winners at the prize giving ceremony held after the contest.
After the event, PAW Foundation announced the formation of a runners wing, PAW Runners, which would conduct various awareness programs in Dhaka.
Speaking to Dhaka Tribune, PAW Chairman Emil said the PAW Runners organization would work towards building a community of animal welfare and environmental activists, who would help them conduct voluntary activities on behalf of the organization.
"We are planning to create a network of runners who are also interested in protecting the environment and helping animals," he explained.
Since its inception five years ago, PAW Foundation has conducted several awareness campaigns against animal cruelty.
The foundation has spearheaded many lawsuits against animal abusers and helped rescue, treat and rehabilitate wounded animals—specially stray dogs in Dhaka.
