Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan on Sunday questioned the Election Commission’s silence over alleged flaws in the postal ballot system, saying the issue raises serious concerns.
He said although BNP has reservations on several matters, including the postal ballot system, the party has chosen to remain restrained in the greater interest of holding the election on schedule.
“The Election Commission is trying to identify so-called flaws related to dual citizenship. But despite clear problems in the postal ballot system, the commission remains silent, which is questionable,” he said.
Nazrul Islam Khan made the remarks at a discussion organised by the Nationalist Freedom Fighters’ Party at the National Press Club on Sunday afternoon, marking the 90th birth anniversary of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman.
The programme was chaired by Freedom Fighters’ Party President Ishtiaq Aziz Ulfat. Senior Vice President Engineer Nazrul Islam Khan and Vice President Dr Jahangir Alam also spoke at the event.
The BNP leader said his party wants the election to be held on time and has therefore accepted many issues despite reservations.
He also criticised attempts to portray the July movement as a “second independence,” saying such narratives undermine the significance of the Liberation War.
Recalling the role of Ziaur Rahman, Nazrul Islam Khan described the late president as a far-sighted and courageous statesman who initiated the first armed resistance against the Pakistani occupation forces.
“Even his opponents never questioned his honesty. As president, he worked tirelessly every day for the welfare of the country and its people,” he said.
He added that carrying forward the spirit and ideals of Shaheed Zia is essential to taking the country forward.
