After discussions regarding seat-sharing on Friday night, the Jatiya Party (JaPa) has declared its plan to continue negotiations with the ruling Awami League on Saturday, aiming to resolve the issue.
"We will hold a meeting with the Awami League today (Saturday),” JaPa Secretary General Mujibul Haque Chunnu told the media on Saturday at the party chairperson's Banani office.
“On Friday’s meeting, discussions were held on conducting the 12th national parliamentary election smoothly, including seat-sharing and various other issues,” he said.
Party sources have indicated that an election agreement has been reached between the Awami League and JaPa for 26 constituencies in the election. In these constituencies, there will be no candidates with the boat symbol opposing those with the plough symbol.
When asked about his satisfaction with the agreement, said that he would neither express happiness nor dissatisfaction. He added: "Further discussions are to take place."
He also did not confirm whether the number of agreed-upon seats was 26.
A source related to Friday's agreement meeting revealed that two JaPa leaders negotiated until the end for at least 40 seats. However, the Awami League leaders did not agree to this.
Sources from the Awami League and JaPa said that JaPa is seeking the withdrawal of the Awami League's candidates with the boat symbol in several constituencies. Additionally, JaPa wants the independent candidates from the Awami League to also withdraw their candidacies.
The matter has been under discussion for a few days between the leaders of the two parties. However, both parties are keeping the location and the subjects of the meetings confidential.
