Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Whip Shamsul Haque Chowdhury on Thursday reportedly violated the electoral code of conduct by riding a vehicle carrying the national flag and taking police protocol while submitting nomination papers.

The three-term parliament member is running independently in the Chittagong-12 constituency without a party nomination.

Shamsul Haque Chowdhury visited the office of Chittagong Deputy Commissioner and Returning Officer Abul Basar Mohammad Fakhruzzaman for the nomination paper submission.

According to Article 14(1) and 14(2) of the electoral rules, individuals benefiting from the government cannot integrate "election programs or activities" into their government agenda. Moreover, government beneficiaries, especially those holding significant positions, are prohibited from utilizing government vehicles, propaganda tools, or other benefits in election campaigns.

Using government vehicles and police protocol for election activities is deemed inappropriate under these rules.

Despite this, Chowdhury argued that there are no restrictions on the use of government vehicles or police protocol outside his constituency, as per the rules.

The whip said he has not utilized a government vehicle in the past five years, nor has he consumed fuel.
