Sammilita Islami Oikkya Jote to join national polls

  • Demands to postpone polls’ schedule by 10 days
  • Eight parties comprising the alliance

The Sammilita Islami Oikkya Jote has announced to participate in the 12th national election with eight parties including the Bangladesh Khelafat Andolon. 

They demanded the Election Commission to postpone the polls’ schedule by at least 10 days.

The announcement was made by Advocate Khairul Islam, secretary general of Sammilita Islami Oikkya Jote at a press conference at the National Press Club at around 12pm on Monday. 

The eight parties are Bangladesh Khelafat Andolan, Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Nizam-e-Islam Party, Bangladesh Janasheba Andolan, Bangladesh Islamic Liberal Party, Bangladesh Muslim Janata Party, Bangladesh Islami Democratic Forum, and Bangladesh United Islamic Party.

Advocate Khairul Islam in his speech said that various conspiracies are going on at home and abroad regarding Bangladesh. “We have come to the decision to participate in the elections in this difficult time to preserve the country's independence and sovereignty. It is important for all of us to participate in elections in the interest of maintaining the continuity of democracy and protecting the country from all dangers.”

He urged all registered parties, including BNP, to take part in the 12th parliamentary election. “Elections are also part of a democratic movement.”

"We are hopeful that the Election Commission will keep its commitment," the party secretary general told reporters. Some 300 candidates will participate in the 12th parliamentary election,” he added. 

Regarding the electoral symbol, he said: "A case is going on over our previous election symbol, the banyan tree. But we are hopeful that the Election Commission will give us the symbol. Otherwise, we will contest on a new symbol.”

On November 15, Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal announced the schedule for the 12th parliamentary elections.

It will be held on January 7.

In a televised address, he also urged political parties to find a way to avoid conflict ahead of the 12th parliamentary elections and asked voters to exercise their right to vote without fear.

As per schedule, nominations are to be filed by November 30, which will be scrutinized from December 1 to 4. The last date for the withdrawal of nominations is December 17.

Symbols will be allotted to the political parties, and the election campaign will begin on December 18.

The total number of voters is about 119,700,000, and the number of polling stations is around 42,000. A total of 262,000 booths will be used for voting.
