Islami Andolan Bangladesh Ameer and Charmonai Pir Mufti Syed Muhammad Rezaul Karim has said that although the BNP made many promises before the election, there has been no sign of those promises being implemented six months after the party formed the government.
He made the remarks while addressing the district representatives’ conference of Islami Andolan Bangladesh at the BMA auditorium in the capital on Saturday.
The Charmonai Pir claimed that the situation had deteriorated in most areas since the BNP formed the government.
He said 20,000 people had become unemployed in six months and an average of 10 people were being killed every day, citing the figures as evidence of the government’s failure.
Speaking about the law and judicial system, he said: “Although police arrest killers after people are murdered, there is no trial. Even when verdicts are announced in lower courts, those verdicts are not implemented, and justice loses its way inside the courts.
“Yet people expected the police to become active before crimes were committed and criminals to be neutralized before crimes took place. The government has been completely unsuccessful in making the law enforcement agencies effective to the desired extent.”
He further said: “Load-shedding has exceeded all limits. The country’s stability is under threat due to the fuel crisis. I would tell the government to ensure people’s security, reduce load-shedding, resolve the fuel crisis and control commodity prices. Otherwise, people’s anger may reach its limit.”
Calling the government’s role in carrying out reforms disappointing, the Islami Andolan Bangladesh chief said: “We have repeatedly spoken about reforms. But the government’s role in this regard is disappointing.
“National consensus had been reached on the issue of presidential elections in the July Charter. But the same consensus reached on the issue was not followed in the latest presidential election. The government has taken a position that is outright opposed to other issues of reform.”
Warning the government, he said: “Authoritarianism was established in the country by taking advantage of constitutional opportunities and the weakness of constitutional institutions. Therefore, our demand was to carry out reforms in line with the July Charter and ensure the permanent abolition of authoritarianism from the country.
“I want to warn the government that if it does not carry out reforms, the government will have to bear responsibility for the dire consequences that may arise.”
