The Election Commission on Monday ordered an investigation into a video that showed a suspended local leader of the Chhatra League casting fake votes for the Awami League candidate in the Lakshmipur-3 by-polls.

Returning Officer Md Farhad Hossain has ordered District Election Officer Mohammad Shafiqur Rahman to submit a report within three days.

Shafiqur has also been ordered to interview the polling agents and law enforcement agency officials who were at the South Khaguria Government Primary School polling centre where the incident allegedly took place.

A video of the incident went viral on social media.

The incident took place on Monday during the by-polls held in Lakshmipur-3, where the Awami League candidate, Golam Faruque Pinku, won by a huge margin.

Faruque bagged 120,599 votes, while his nearest rival, Jatiya Party-nominated Md Rakib Hossain got 3,846 votes.

On Sunday, two out of the four candidates decided to boycott the by-polls for the Lakshmipur-3 constituency, alleging that fraudulent votes were being cast.

Mohammad Rakib Hossain from the Jatiya Party and Shamsul Karim Khokon from the Zaker Party made their announcement at the Lakshmipur Press Club at 1:30pm on Sunday.

On October 1, the parliament secretariat declared the two seats vacant, following the deaths of Lakshmipur-3 lawmaker AKM Shajahan Kamal and Brahmanbaria-2 lawmaker Abdus Sattar Bhuiyan.
