Awami League-backed candidate Shahadab Akbar Labu Chowdhury, the younger son of late Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, won the Faridpur-2 by-polls on Saturday.
The constitution saw a low voter turnout since morning, as only 83,690 people, among 318,479 voters cast their votes. It is only 26.27%.
District Election Officer Habibur Rahman said that Shahdab bagged 68,812 votes, while his rival Bangladesh Khilafat Andolan nominee Md Zainul Abedin Bakul Mia got 14,878 votes.
At a polling centre at Bautipara Government Primary School of Nagarkanda upazila there were only 2,312 voters but only 396 votes were cast.
Presiding Officer Shamsul Haque said Bangladesh Khilafat Andolan nominee Md Zainul Abedin Bakul Mia did not have an agent present at the polling centre. When asked about the reason, he said he had no idea.
The by-polls to Faridpur-2 constituency ended at 4pm on Saturday.
The parliamentary seat was declared vacant on September 11 after the death of the lawmaker from the constituency, Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury. The Election Commission announced the schedule for the by-polls on September 26.
The Presiding Officer of Chandakhola Government Primary School Centre in Saltha Abul Khair said that 13% of people cast their votes between 8am-12pm. On the other hand, 400 votes have been cast at 12pm out of 1,800 votes in Fulbaria Government Primary School Centre.
Upazila Agriculture Officer Jeevanshu Das, presiding officer of Saltha Government Primary School Centre, said that even though it was the first time voting through EVM, the voters did not face any problems.
