Prime Minister's Private Industry and Investment Adviser Salman F Rahman on Saturday said whether the BNP participates or not, national polls will proceed as scheduled.
“BNP is now saying that they will not join the polls unless there is a caretaker government. The next national parliament election will be held as per the constitution. There will be no caretaker government,” he said.
He was speaking at the triennial conference of Dhaka District Awami League at the old trade fair grounds in Sherbangla Nagar, Agargaon in the capital.
Referring to the 1/11, Salman F Rahman said there was an attempt to hold elections at the time by keeping Sheikh Hasina imprisoned, but it was unsuccessful.
Presidium committee member of Bangladesh Awami League Jahangir Kabir Nanak said BNP wants to make the country a militant state.
“We won't let that happen while we're alive. If Ziaur Rahman was alive, he would have been hanged for killing Bangabandhu, Sheikh Kamal, and Sheikh Russel,” he added.
Bahauddin Nashim, joint general secretary of the Awami League, said: “The conference of the Dhaka district has turned into a sea of people. BNP disrespected the law. In the name of the movement, they seek to cause chaos. We will oppose all evil forces of the community.”
Thousands of leaders and activists of the ruling party joined the Dhaka district Awami League's triennial conference on Saturday.
After almost six years, the triennial conference of Dhaka district Awami League is being held at the capital's Sher-E-Bangla Nagar area.
The conference was inaugurated by hoisting the party flag at around 2:25pm, reports Bangla Tribune.
The party men started gathering around the platform shaped like Awami League's boat symbol since morning.
As the conference was held after a long time, the upazilas were covered with banners and festoons in the names of the leaders and activists of the Dhaka district.
Bangladesh Awami League Presidium Member Advocate Kamrul Islam inaugurated the conference while the General Secretary Obaidul Quader was present as the chief guest.
