Youth shot dead in Chittagong election violence

Clashes reported at several centres in another union of the district

A man was killed during a clash between the supporters of two member candidates in the elections to Singhora Union Parishad in Anwara of Chittagong on Wednesday morning.

The incident took place at ward No 7 of the union around 12:30pm, said Syed Mohammad Anwar Khaled, the upazila election officer.

The deceased was identified as Omkar Dutta, 38, son of Nepal Dutta, Anwara police Officer-in-Charge (OC) SM Didarul Islam Sikder confirmed to Dhaka Tribune.

The clash broke out near the Singhora Government Primary School center. Omkar was shot and taken to a local hospital, where the duty doctor declared him dead.

The member candidates are Raghunath Sikder and Nazim Uddin.

Earlier in the day, clashes broke out between the followers of chairman candidates at several centers of Ahla Karoldenga Union in Boalkhali upazila of Chittagong.

At that time, a number of vehicles including eight carrying journalists were also vandalized.

Two people were arrested in connection with the violence, said Executive Magistrate Mamunul Haq Anik, which also received a minor head injury.
