Tangail UP polls: Awami League wins one, loses another

Tangail District Election Officer AHM Kamrul Hasan said that there were no major irregularities in the election

Awami League candidates won in one Union Parishad (UP) polls while lost another in Gopalpur upazila of Tangail.

Returning Officer Nazma Sultana announced the results Wednesday night.

Awami League's nominated candidate Anisur Rahman Talukdar Hira (boat symbol) was unofficially elected in Hemnagar union with 6,141 votes. His closest opponent Masud Khan Nasir (table fan symbol) received 5,199 votes.

Independent candidate Mizanur Rahman Talukder (pineapple symbol) won unofficially with 8,475 votes in Jhawail union. His closest opponent Awami League candidate Ayesha Akhter Sikha (boat symbol) received 7,906 votes.

Tangail District Election Officer AHM Kamrul Hasan said that there were no major irregularities in the election.

Meanwhile, at least 5 people were injured during a clash between the supporters of the Awami League and BNP candidates before voting began. 

The Tangail district election office deployed six police members and 15 of the Ansar force in each of the 28 polling stations, labelling them as vulnerable.

The district election office reported that there were 420 Ansar members and 265 police officers on duty.

Four executive magistrates, two judicial magistrates and election officials were overseeing the polls in Hemnagar and Jhawail union parishads under Gopalpur Upazila on Wednesday.

Twelve candidates were vying for the two chairmen posts, 78 for the member and 22 for the reserved member posts. The total number of voters in the two unions is 58,684.
