Ruling party General Secretary Obaidul Quader said Awami League has taken Dhaka University Central Student Union (Ducsu) election seriously and hopes for victory in polls.
Awami League is considering the election important and hopes that Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) will come out successful.
“We have appointed four of our central leaders to observe the campus situation. We take the election very seriously and hope we will win in the election democratically,” said Quader.
He said this at a press briefing at Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina’s political office in Dhanmondi in the capital on Friday morning.
Quader also said that if opposition student’s wings form alliance then BCL and like-minded student organizations will also form alliance.
Quader, who is also the Road Transport and Bridges Minister, further said that BNP’s inability to wage strong political movement to ensure the release of its imprisoned Chairperson Khaleda Zia is evidence of its failings as a political party.
He said: “The government has no influence over the Khaleda Zia issue. BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has been imprisoned after being convicted in a corruption case. There is no relation between her imprisonment and politics.”
Terming BNP a failed party, Quader said there is no reason to blame the government for this.
Quader, also former general secretary of BCL told that the public will not support BNP's ongoing political movement due to the party’s leaders’ ties to corruption.
"Public rejected BNP in the 11th general election as it is a party full of corruption and criminals. People will not support them in the coming days either," he said.
He informed that a total of 2,076 Awami League candidates collected nomination papers for chairman post while 3,445 candidates for vice-chairman post to contest the upazila elections.
