The Gaibandha district administration has declared the nomination papers of former Jatiya Party (JaPa) lawmaker Col (retd) Abdul Quader Khan, prime accused in the murder of Awami League MP Md Manjurul Islam Liton, to be “legal”.

Gaibandha Deputy Commissioner and district Returning Officer Sebastin Rema made the announcement on Sunday afternoon when scrutinizing the nomination papers submitted for the upcoming 11th parliamentary election in the district.

Speaking to the Dhaka Tribune, Abdul Quader’s wife Dr Nasima Khatun said her husband’s nomination form for Gaibandha 1 constituency was collected on November 23 and the papers were submitted on November 29.

“We have followed due process to file my husband’s nomination papers,” she added.

Liton, Awami League lawmaker in Gaibandha 1, was shot at his village home in Sundarganj area’s Masterpara on December 31, 2016. He died in a hospital after several hours.

Abdul Quader confessed to planning and financing Liton’s murder on February 24, 2017 before a Gaibandha court, saying he had done it because of political rivalry.

Abdul Quader is currently in jail with seven other accused in the case.

With Quader, the number of candidates whose nomination papers have been declared legal stands at 10 in Gaibandha 1.

The returning officer’s office rejected the nomination papers of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal candidate Abdur Razzak Sarkar and independent nomination seekers ABM Mizanur Rahman, Joynal Abedin (Shada), Md Abdur Rahman, Emdadul Haque Nadim, and Awami League Sundarganj upazila unit Senior Joint Convener Afroza Bari, who has submitted nomination papers as an independent candidate.
