Private TV channel ETV's former chairman Abdus Salam formally joined Dr Kamal Hossain-led Gono Forum, a key component of Jatiya Oikya Front, ahead of the upcoming general election.
Salam officially made the alliance at a press conference of the party held at the National Press Club on Sunday, reports UNB.
Dr Kamal Hossain welcomed Salam and asked him to work to empower the countrymen.
Speaking at the press meet, Salam said: “ETV was shut down on this day [November 25 in 2015]. I was in jail for two and a half years. I had to face such difficulties so I could fight to uphold the truth.”
He joined Dr Kamal’s Gono Forum with a hope of improving the dire state of the current political situation, he added.
At the beginning of the press meet, Dr Kamal introduced Dr Reza Kibria, son of slain former Awami League finance minister Shah AMS Kibria and former Kurigram Awami League president Maj Gen (retd) AMSA Amin, who recently joined Gono Forum.
The duo said they joined Gono Forum to work for the country, under the leadership of Dr Kamal.
Earlier, 10 retired defence officers formally joined Gono Forum as well.
Gono Forum Training Affairs Secretary Rafiqul Islam Pathik said two more Awami League leaders, a former minister and a son of a late minister, were also supposed to join the party, but could not be present at the Press Club.
Furthermore, he said some ruling party leaders are also likely to join Gono Forum soon.
