Voting is underway in Rangamati’s Naniarchar upazila by-polls.

The voting began at 8am on Wednesday in 14 polling centres and will continue till 4pm.

Voter turnout was low in the morning but election officials hope more voters will show up later.

A huge number of law enforcers, including police, army personnel and Border Guard Bangladesh have been deployed in the polling areas to maintain law and order.

There are a total of 32,854 voters—17,008 men and 15,846 women—in four unions of this upazila.

In the by-polls, three candidates are running for chairman post.

Returning Officer Abdul Latif Sheikh said voters are casting their ballots peacefully.

No untoward incident has been reported yet from any polling centre, he said.

The upazila chairman post remained vacant since the death of Shaktiman Chakma.

On May 3, unknown assailants shot him dead near his office.
