Dhaka University (DU) authorities on Sunday formed a three-member probe committee to investigate the scuffle between teachers and students near the Senate Building premises on Saturday.
Prof Fazlur Rahman, a teacher of the Institute of Education and Research and an assistant proctor, has been named head of the committee that includes two other assistant proctors, confirmed DU Proctor Prof M Amzad Ali.
The other two members are Prof Aftab Ali Sheikh of the Chemistry Department and Prof Maksudur Rahman of the Geography and Environment Department.
"The committee has been asked to submit an investigation report as soon as possible. Disciplinary action will be taken against those involved in the incident,” said Prof Amzad.A group of students on Saturday demonstrated in front of the DU Senate Building, demanding the inclusion of student representatives in the senate for the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) elections.
At around 3:30pm, about 20-25 protesters carrying placards brought out a procession from in front of the Aparajeyo Bangla sculpture and staged a sit-in at the Senate Building gate.
As the students attempted to enter the Senate Building, a group of teachers allegedly pushed them, causing a brief scuffle which left eight people injured.
The students who were in the protest will call a press conference at Madhur Canteen on Monday, 12pm, confirmed Masud Al Mahadi, a student of the Journalism and Mass Communication department.
