The Bangladesh Technical Education Board (BTEB) has ordered a suspension of new student admissions at 621 technical education institutions across the country and asked them to explain why their academic approval should not be revoked.
In an office order issued on Thursday, the board directed 443 institutions offering the Secondary School Certificate (SSC-Vocational) programme and 178 institutions under the Dakhil (Vocational) programme to submit written explanations within seven working days.
According to the order, the board had earlier published a notice on its website asking the institutions to explain by July 22 why admissions for the 2026–27 academic session should not be suspended and why their approval to conduct classes should not be cancelled or withdrawn, citing their prolonged failure to enrol students.
While some institutions responded to the notice, the remaining listed institutions have yet to submit any explanation.
The board has now instructed those institutions to provide written explanations within the next seven working days.
The order further states that, under the Private Technical Education Institution Establishment, Academic Operation and Recognition Policy-2024, the board may, with government approval, cancel or withdraw an institution's academic approval if it fails to meet prescribed requirements. These include student enrolment, examination results, infrastructure, recruitment of teachers and staff, management committee, furniture, equipment, library facilities, conditions attached to academic approval, and other applicable standards.
The office order also includes a list of the 443 SSC (Vocational) institutions and 178 Dakhil (Vocational) institutions covered by the directive.
