Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam has announced that the government plans to transform the University Grants Commission (UGC) into the University Commission.
Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka this evening, Alam explained: “The University Grants Commission will become the University Commission by dropping the word ‘grants.’ This will involve significant restructuring and reforms.”
He highlighted the need for this change, given the increasing number of public and private universities in the country.
The new University Commission will focus on ensuring the quality of tertiary education, aligning it with international standards, and promoting research.
Alam also addressed updates to the school curriculum, noting that textbooks for classes nine and ten will be rationalized to make them more relevant and up-to-date.
To enhance teaching quality, the government will introduce training programs for non-government school teachers, who currently lack adequate training opportunities compared to their government counterparts.
Additionally, Alam emphasized the government’s resolve to eliminate corruption in the education sector, particularly in the areas of teacher promotions and transfers.
He said: “The ‘trade’ surrounding promotions and transfers in the education sector has been identified. Measures will be taken to ensure the sector is free of corruption.”
The government’s efforts aim to modernize education at all levels, improve standards, and foster transparency.
