Dhaka University authorities have announced that vehicle entry to the campus will be restricted daily from 5pm to 10pm.
During this period, only vehicles with university stickers and emergency service vehicles will be allowed access. On holidays, entry will be restricted from 3pm onwards.
This information was shared in an urgent notice issued by the Proctor’s Office on Saturday.
The notice said that the regulation aims to ensure the overall safety of Dhaka University students.
According to the announcement, on Fridays, Saturdays, and public holidays, vehicle entry will be restricted from 3pm to 10pm.
On regular working days, the restriction will apply from 5pm to 10pm.
During these times, only vehicles with Dhaka University stickers and those providing emergency services (such as ambulances, doctors, patients, journalists, and other government vehicles) will be allowed entry into the campus.
Dhaka University Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed told Dhaka Tribune that the decision to restrict vehicle entry was made to maintain campus safety.
He said that this has been a long-standing demand of the students.
"Dhaka University had almost turned into a hub of chaos, similar to Sadarghat. There is hardly any wrongdoing that hasn’t taken place here. The environment of other universities is nothing like this. In response to the students’ persistent demands and to improve the overall situation of the university, this decision has been taken," he explained.
The proctor assured saying: "Dhaka University will no longer remain like Sadarghat."
Israt Jahan Amy, a student of Dhaka University, expressed her support for the decision, calling it a very positive step.
She said: "This is a very good decision. The number of vehicles inside the campus makes it extremely difficult for us to walk around. Crossing roads becomes a major challenge, and the high speed of these vehicles increases the risk of accidents. Additionally, it disrupts the campus environment. I believe implementing this decision will be highly beneficial."
Sushmita Rani Munshi, another student of Dhaka University, said: "While this decision might address internal problems on campus, it will likely cause severe traffic congestion on roads outside the barricades. Many of us students have to leave the campus for tuition or other work, and unexpected traffic jams will waste both time and money."
Sushmita further added: "Controlling outsiders cannot be fully achieved just by restricting vehicles. Outsiders can still enter the campus on foot."
According to the university authorities, barricades will be placed at seven entry points to regulate vehicle access.
These points include Shahbagh, Doel Chattar, Burn Unit, Shivbari Crossing, Fuller Road, Polashi Mor, and Nilkhet.
The restriction was first enforced on Friday evening.
