Two students of the Independent University of Bangladesh (IUB) have won the Bangladesh National Debating Championship 2022.
The duo are Ahmed Tousif Jami of the Department of Economics and Wasi Chowdhury of BBA (Marketing).
Of them, Ahmed won the “Best Debater” award and was also adjudged the “Best Speaker” of the finals of the competition.
The championship was organized by Bangladesh Debating Council (BDC) during March 11-12.
This was the first-ever championship organized by the BDC in Bangladesh virtually on the Zoom platform.
Apart from several renowned debaters from Bangladesh, there were judges from Malaysia and the Philippines.
In the finals, the IUB team beat Khulna University of Science and Technology, Scholastica, and Adamjee Cantonment College, Institute of Business Administration of Dhaka University, and Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) to clinch the title.
The other participating institutions included Bangladesh University of Professionals, Jahangirnagar University, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Chittagong University, North South University, and the Asian University for Women.
The BDC has been promoting English debate across the country starting from schools to universities since 2005 with all top educational institutions in Bangladesh.
The IUB Debating Club (IUBDC), founded in 1999, is home to the Ascension, the largest debating competition in South Asia. The club has previously become champions in the United Asian Debating Championships.
Last year, IUBDC was a finalist in all three national level debating competitions in Bangladesh.
Besides debating, Ahmad Tousif Jami has represented IUB as a judge across Europe, North America and the Middle East and competitions at the Manchester Schools, Massachusetts World Schools Debating Championships (WSDC) Invitationals, Oxford WSDC, etc.
