DU hosts largest debate competition on July Revolution

The country’s largest debate competition concluded at Shahid Sergeant Zahurul Huq Hall at Dhaka University on Saturday, showcasing the theme of the July Revolution.

Organized by the debate organization “House of Debaters (DOH)”, the event titled “Savoy Presents 8th Shahid Sergeant Zahurul Huq Memorial Inter-Club Debate Competition 2024” spanned three days, featuring 58 teams from schools, colleges, and universities.

Participants debated diverse topics such as national and international current affairs, the future of student politics, human civilization's continuity crises, and economic policies, adding vibrancy to the competition.

Adamjee Cantonment College Debating Club emerged victorious, debating the topic: "This parliament will support the proportional representation system in Bangladesh's upcoming elections."

The Jashim Uddin Hall Debating Club of DU claimed the Champion title at the university level.

Mohammad Belal Hossain Chowdhury, member (VAT Policy) of the National Board of Revenue (NBR), attended as the chief guest.

He encouraged participants to consider civil service careers, emphasizing their potential to contribute significantly to policymaking and national development.

Dr Sayema Haque Bidisha, pro-vice chancellor (Administration) of Dhaka University, was also present at the ceremony.

Dr Faruk Shah, provost of Shahid Sergeant Zahurul Huq Hall, highlighted the importance of rationality, reasoning, and ethics in solving historical and contemporary challenges.

He praised the House of Debaters for fostering these values among the participants. 

Arpita Goldar, president of Dhaka University Debating Society (DUDS), praised the competition's time management and overall satisfaction among participants.

Monem Shahriar Antu, president of House of Debaters, expressed satisfaction with the quality of the debate motions and the absence of complaints, declaring the event a resounding success.

The event not only celebrated critical thinking and reasoning but also underscored the importance of dialogue and debate in shaping future leaders.
