Dhaka University (DU) authorities will reopen the dormitories and resume classes from May 17 and 24 following the decision of the Education Ministry.
The Academic Council of DU which earlier set March 13 for reopening residential halls, now revised their decision in line with the announcement of Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni.
DU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof M Akhtaruzzaman shared the information at a press conference held after the Academic Council meeting on Tuesday.
He said that the exam routine that was fixed earlier, in line with the plan to reopen halls on March 13, is no longer effective, adding that: "We will start taking exams after two weeks of reopening halls with the coordination of faculty and related departments.
"We made the decision as the government said teachers and students are likely to be vaccinated by May 17. We learned that the antibodies start working four weeks after the first dose of vaccine, for that reason we urged the government to vaccinate teachers, students, staff and employees by April 17," said DU the VC.
Prof Akhtaruzzaman remarked it is not possible to make decisions solely on the basis of one issue during the time of a pandemic.
“We have to move towards a coordinated decision, that is why we took the decision in line with the government.”
Being asked about the 72-hours ultimatum issued by students, he replied: “I firmly believe that they will behave responsibly in this regard.”
A group of DU students under the banner, “General Students of DU,” issued a 72-hour ultimatum on Monday to the authorities to come up with the decision of reopening halls from March 1.
