The Dhaka University (DU) authorities detained 11 students and handed them over to Shahbagh police for allegedly tearing up posters of National Mourning Day on Tuesday afternoon.
Four of the students are members of Bangladesh Chhatra League's DU unit, while the others are non-political and assigned to Bijoy Ekattor Residential Hall, said sources.
When contacted, Shahbagh police station OC Abul Hasan confirmed it to the Dhaka Tribune saying the students were in their custody.
No case has been filed regarding this matter yet.
The detainees are: banking and insurance student Asif Hossain, Islamic history and culture student Riaz Uddin, psychology student Azim Uddin, Islamic studies student Mahmudul Hasan, international relations students Moksedul Alam and Ehsan Ahmed, Pali and Buddhist studies student Monir Hossain, philosophy student GM Bayazid Islam, accounting information systems student Arafat Islam, tourism and hospitality management student Obaidul Haque Bhuiyan and sociology student Shahinuzzaman.
Prof AJM Shafiul Alam Bhuiyan, provost of Bijoy Ekattor Hall, said the students tore up posters that contained the photo of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, which caused an uproar both on campus and social media.
“Learning about the incident, we checked the CCTV footage and identified the offenders. They were handed over to Shahbagh police in the presence of the university proctor body,” he said.
Chhatra League's Bijoy Ekattor Hall unit President Fakir Rasel Ahmed confirmed four members of the ruling party's student wing were among the detainees.
“They are inactive members,” he said, adding that some of the students had intentionally torn up the post, while other had done it unintentionally.
DU acting proctor Prof M Amzad Ali said the students had made a big mistake by tearing up the posters of Bangabandhu.
“The hall authority can take further actions with the help of police, even file a case,” he added.
