Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has urged homeowners, tenants and mess (shared accommodation) members in the capital to register with the Citizen Information Management System (CIMS), saying the platform will strengthen technology-based policing and enhance public safety.
The digital information management system registers, stores and updates the basic information of homeowners, tenants and mess members living in Dhaka.
DMP launched the software-based CIMS at Ramna Police Station on September 1, 2016. The system was expanded to all police stations across the capital in 2017, while the CIMS mobile app was introduced in 2019 to simplify the registration process.
According to DMP, 3,673,238 households have been registered in the CIMS database, which contains information on more than 5 million citizens. Police said the registration process is ongoing and urged all residents of the capital to enroll.
Why register with CIMS
DMP said CIMS helps maintain accurate and up-to-date citizen information, making beat policing more effective. The database also supports crime prevention and investigation, assists in identifying missing persons, verifies the identities of suspected individuals and enables the rapid collection and use of information during emergencies.
How to register
CIMS registration forms are available at every police station and police outpost within the Dhaka metropolitan area. Citizens can collect a form, complete it and submit it to the relevant police station. DMP advises applicants to keep a photocopy of the completed form for their records before submitting it.
Each DMP police station is divided into multiple beats, with a designated beat officer assigned to each area. Residents may contact their respective beat officer for assistance whenever necessary.
If a resident changes address, they must register again with the police station responsible for their new address.
Benefits for homeowners and tenants
DMP said homeowners can use CIMS registration to verify the identities of prospective tenants, reducing the risk of criminals or fraudsters renting or taking shelter on their premises and helping them avoid unnecessary harassment.
For tenants, registration provides an opportunity to become acquainted with their local beat officer, receive police assistance more quickly when needed and benefit from identity verification.
Role in crime prevention
According to DMP, the CIMS database plays an important role in criminal investigations by helping identify absconding criminals, verify information on suspected individuals and support timely crime prevention efforts.
Police also said the system has strengthened beat policing and helped build greater trust between law enforcement agencies and the public.
