The capital's Motijheel area on Monday turned chaotic over the appointment of a new chairman of Islami Bank Bangladesh PLC.
The police baton-charged and fired tear gas shells to disperse a human chain of the “Conscious Customer Forum” in front of the bank's head office.
Additionally, sound grenades and water cannons were fired to disperse the protesters.
Several people were reportedly injured in the chase and counter-chase. Currently, the police and the protesters are in a face-to-face position in that area.
According to relevant sources, former deputy governor of Bangladesh Bank Khurshid Alam was appointed as the new chairman of Islami Bank on the last working day before the Eid-ul-Azha holiday.
Protesters claimed that they will not allow Khurshid Alam to enter the bank under any circumstances, as he was a “controversial appointment.”
Protesting against this appointment and announcing their intent to prevent his entry, the deposits have been stationed in front of the bank's head office since Monday morning.
By 9:00am Monday, the first working day after the Eid holidays, members of the forum began gathering in front of the Islami Bank Tower in Dilkusha, Motijheel.
When they took up positions there and started forming a human chain, the police took action against them. Tear gas and sound grenades were fired at the protesters, and the police dispersed them using water cannons.
Currently, there is tension in the area, as the police and the customer forum members are still in a face-to-face position to avoid any unpleasant situation.
