Two people died after a fire broke out at LA Plaza, a commercial building in Mirpur-2 in the capital.
The deceased are a man and a woman. They died while undergoing treatment at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital late Monday night.
The male victim was identified as Rakib Hasan, while the identity of the deceased woman could not be immediately confirmed.
Sub-Inspector Ahsan Sohel of Mirpur Police Station confirmed the deaths.
According to the Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence, they received a report of the fire at the multi-storey commercial building, LA Plaza, at 1:52pm on Monday. The blaze was brought under control at around 3:22pm after six firefighting units worked at the scene.
Shajahan Siraj, an officer of the Mirpur fire service station, said the fire originated on the third floor of the 11-storey building.
Following the outbreak, many people inside the building rushed to the roof, while others were trapped on different floors.
Firefighters rescued 24 people — 14 men and 10 women — from the roof and various floors of the building using a turntable ladder (TTL), he added.
