Police recovered the hanging body of an 11-year-old domestic worker, Bibi Halima, from an apartment at the officers’ quarters of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) headquarters in the New Market area of the capital on Monday afternoon.
According to police, the body was found around 3:00 pm on the third floor of a five-storey building. Halima was discovered hanging from a shower pipe in the bathroom with a scarf tied around her neck. After completing legal formalities, the body was sent in the evening to the morgue of Dhaka Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Maruf Hasan of New Market Police Station said, police rushed to the scene after receiving information and broke open the bathroom door latch to recover the body. At the time of the incident, no one was inside the apartment. The main door of the flat was open, but the bathroom door was locked from the inside.
Police said, the flat belongs to Shariful Islam, who serves as a public relations officer of Border Guard Bangladesh. His wife is a physician. Halima had been working at their residence as a domestic help for about six months.
Shariful Islam said, both he and his wife were at their respective workplaces during the incident. His assistant, Md Salauddin, first entered the apartment with groceries and found the bathroom door locked from the inside. After being informed, Shariful returned home and also saw the bathroom door locked. Police later arrived and recovered the body.
Halima hailed from the Bhandari Mochar area of Kamrangirchar. Her father, Shah Alam, is deceased.
