DPDC blames substation fault for Japan Garden City outage

Nine out of 24 residential duildings still remain without electricity

Update : 10 Jul 2026, 06:43 PM

The Dhaka Power Distribution Company Limited (DPDC) has blamed an internal fault at Japan Garden City's privately owned substation for the prolonged power outage that has left nine residential buildings without electricity.

In a letter sent on Thursday to the managing director of Japan Garden City, Ayatullah Imran Ali, executive engineer (current charge) of DPDC's NOCS Adabor, said the outage began at 3:31am on July 7 when a feeder tripped due to an internal fault at the complex's substation.

The letter said that, at the authorities' request, DPDC arranged a temporary shutdown of the 33kV line from 9am to midnight to facilitate fault repairs and emergency maintenance.

However, despite the maintenance work, the feeder tripped each time the substation was tested using two separate power sources. Officials from DPDC's Grid North-1 subsequently advised the authorities on the corrective measures required.

According to the letter, technical tests carried out by Grid North-1 on July 9 found the condition of the substation's 11kV busbar to be unsatisfactory.

DPDC urged the authorities to complete the necessary repairs to the faulty 11kV busbar to ensure customer safety and uninterrupted electricity supply, adding that it remains ready to provide technical assistance.

Meanwhile, residents of the residential complex continued to suffer from the outage on Friday.

Although electricity supply resumed around midnight on Thursday, only 15 of the complex's 24 residential buildings regained power. Buildings 15 through 23 remained without electricity.

Residents demanded a permanent solution, urging that the power distribution system be brought under the direct control of DPDC instead of being managed by the housing complex.

The outage began on July 7, leaving all 24 buildings without electricity. While power was restored to 15 buildings late Thursday, the remaining nine buildings were still without electricity as of Friday.
