A trader was killed and another man suffered burn injuries after a gas cylinder exploded at a motor parts shop in Old Dhaka's Bangshal area early Friday.
The explosion occurred at around 4:30am at a shop in Shia Goli on Mukim Bazar Road.
The deceased was identified as Delwar Hossain, a motor parts trader and resident of Bangshal. The injured, Nazmul Hossain, Delwar's cousin, is undergoing treatment at the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
Md Hamidul Islam, an employee of the shop, said a gas cylinder suddenly exploded inside the store in the early hours of Friday.
The explosion caused a heavy object to fall on Delwar's head, critically injuring him. He also sustained burn injuries in the blast, Hamidul said.
Local residents alerted the Fire Service, and Delwar and Nazmul were taken to the emergency department of DMCH, where doctors declared Delwar dead.
Doctors said Nazmul is now out of danger.
Delwar was the son of Abdul Khalek of Sharsha upazila in Jessore district and the father of one child.
Confirming the death, Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of the DMCH police outpost, said Delwar's body has been kept at the hospital morgue for an autopsy.
He added that Bangshal Police Station has been informed of the incident.
