Mahbub Alam, 57, a former member of the army who was seriously injured in an assault in Uttara, has died while undergoing treatment.
He died at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka on Sunday night, according to Uttara West Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Kamrul.
Mahbub Alam hailed from Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj and had been living in the Uttara East police station area, where he worked at a private company.
SI Md Kamrul said Mahbub Alam had gone to work as a security guard on Road No 12 in Sector 14 of the Uttara West police station area on Friday evening.
At that time, two private cars arrived at the spot. One person got out of a car and suddenly struck Mahbub Alam on the head with a stick. Moments later, five or six others joined in and beat him indiscriminately, leaving him critically injured, before fleeing the scene.
Locals later rescued him and admitted him to CMH, where he died during treatment. His body has been sent to the Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College morgue for autopsy.
Police said efforts are underway to arrest those involved, and a case has been filed in connection with the incident.
