A court has placed 11 accused on a two-day remand in a case filed over an attack, vandalism and looting at Uttara Square Shopping cum Commercial Complex in the capital’s Uttara area.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin passed the order on Tuesday.

Earlier, the investigation officer of the case, SI Md Suman Mia of Uttara West Police Station, produced the accused before the court and sought a seven-day remand for each of them. Defence lawyers, however, submitted petitions seeking their bail.

After hearing both sides, the court granted a two-day remand.

SI Shamim of the prosecution department confirmed the matter.

Those placed on remand are Md Monir Alam, 32; Md Mojibur Rahman, 20; Md Hridoy, 19; Md Manjurul, 32; Md Mahabbat Ali, 18; Shah Poran, 19; Md Shakil, 19; Md Rashidul Islam alias A Rashid, 27; Md Saju, 24; Md Liton, 24; and Jihad, 19.

The attack, vandalism and looting at Uttara Square Shopping Complex took place on the night of March 15 after rumours spread that a rickshaw puller had been beaten to death.

Separate cases were filed by the police and the market authorities over the incident. Police arrested the 11 accused on Monday night following the cases.

During the hearing, defence lawyers argued that there was no evidence linking the accused to the incident. They said some of the accused were rickshaw pullers and day labourers, and there was no proof that they had travelled to or from the scene of the incident.
