Local Government and Rural Development Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain mistakenly carried a magazine to the airport, but it was not from an AK-47 rifle, Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (Retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said on Monday.

“It was a magazine, not an AK-47,” Jahangir said in response to questions from reporters after a meeting of the law and order core committee at the Secretariat.

How it went undetected during the initial airport screening is currently under investigation, he added.

On Saturday, a firearm magazine containing a single bullet was recovered from a travel bag of Asif at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

The incident went viral on social media after UK-based Bangladeshi journalist Zulkarnain Saer posted a video captured by the airport's security cameras, sparking uproar.

Authorities have been instructed to exercise greater caution moving forward.

Referring to the meeting, Jahangir said preparations are underway to ensure that the programs in July and August, marking the anniversary of the 2024 mass uprising, are held smoothly and without disruption.

In response to a question, the adviser said there is currently no specific threat concerning the observances.

When asked about the recent rape in Muradnagar upazila of Comilla, the adviser said law enforcement agencies have taken swift action against those involved.

The 25-year-old woman was reportedly raped in Ramchandrapur Panchkitta village on Thursday night.

Video footage of the incident went viral on social networking sites on Saturday.
