United International University (UIU) students have temporarily suspended their ongoing movement.
Around 6pm on Saturday, they announced the withdrawal of their sit-in protest at a press conference, after which traffic at the Notun Bazar intersection in the capital began returning to normal.
At the press conference, student representative Foisal said: “If the university authorities do not withdraw the expulsion order by 8pm, we will go for a more intense program.”
He further said that on Sunday, a nationwide protest will be held and a hunger strike unto death will begin at the Notun Bazar intersection.
Earlier in the morning, around 8:30am, UIU students began a protest blocking the road at Notun Bazar intersection, demanding the withdrawal of expulsion orders along with their five-point demands.
This led to severe traffic disruption and caused suffering to regular commuters.
Later, around 11am, police from Vatara police station attempted to disperse the students.
Protesters claimed several students were injured in the police operation. Although they were briefly scattered, the students soon regrouped and resumed the blockade.
