Patients at Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) often complain about the unclean and unhygienic environment at the facility.

There is increasing anger among patients and their relatives about the unclean environment at BMU.

A patient named Asa Fahima, from Narayanganj, told this reporter that the condition of the toilets is very poor. Even a healthy person will become sick if he goes to one of these toilets, she complained.

Trash bins are also unavailable in many places. However, this reporter found a bunch of them lying around in random places.

The taps installed for washing hands are also out of order. There is trash around the taps as well.

Trash can also be seen on the staircase alongside filthy walls. The elevators that have been out of use have become a miniscule dumping station.

Kamruzzaman, admitted at cabin number 214, said that he cannot sleep properly due to bed bugs in the hospital bed. He said he sleeps in the balcony instead.

In addition to this, many patients say that the ward boys and nurses are quite rude and unfriendly in their attitude.

Many also say that there is no liftman in the lifts most of the times.

A hospital official who did not want to be named said that liftmen go beyond their duties and get involved in illegal transactions with patients. Some were found buying tickets for patients while others were busy arranging beds.

Patients are also unhappy over the quality of food and overall catering services. They say the food most of the time is bland and is served late. One patient complained that lunch is served at around 4pm.

BMU Director Brigadier General Abu Noman MD Muslim Uddin said: "It is not possible to solve problems that have been going on for years anytime soon. However, the hospital is under strong supervision right now. We go to different blocks every day to check on the irregularities and try to solve them.”

When asked about the absence of the liftman, the director said that it is mainly the responsibility of the operation and maintenance department. The appropriate departments will be informed of the matter, he added.
