A mobile court was conducted at the Sadarghat launch terminal to discourage the use of single-use plastic and polythene on launches.
The operation was led by Executive Magistrate Md Rizwan Ul Islam from the Department of Environment’s Monitoring and Enforcement Division. The drive began at 9pm on Saturday and continued late into the night.
A similar operation had been carried out the previous night as well.
During Saturday’s operation, the supervisors and staff of departing launches were instructed to ensure that passengers do not bring single-use plastic on board.
Additionally, used polythene, plastic, food waste, and other rubbish were to be disposed of in designated bins on the launches, as dumping them into the river is strictly prohibited.
The presence of waste disposal bins on each launch was verified through the river police. Launches found lacking sufficient bins were instructed to arrange for them.
The river police were also directed to regularly monitor compliance with these guidelines.
During the operation, the river police were seen using hand-mikes to raise awareness among passengers. Authorities have instructed that the campaign continue.
On the same night, raids were also conducted at Moylar Bhagar Road, Mridhabari, and Matuail Sharifpara areas to take action against air-polluting factories.
As a result of consecutive operations over several days, all polluting industrial facilities in these areas were found to be shut down.
